WASHINGTON STATE FIREFIGHTER “FIREMAN JOHNNY” HAS HIS ACCOUNT DELETED BY FLICKR
Posted on January 17, 2011, 7:13 am, by Thomas Hawk, under Censorship, Flickr.

I was disappointed this weekend to learn that a friend of mine and fellow DMU member “Fireman Johnny” had his long-standing Flickr account of 5 years deleted without warning by Flickr Friday night.

Johnny is a Washington State firefighter who was very active in our DMU group where he could always be counted on to tell us great stories about what real life as a firefighter was like. In addition to being active in our DMU group, Johnny also administered two other groups on Flickr. One that warned about the dangers of drinking and driving and another “The Brave Soldiers and the families who support them” which was a central place for military families to come talk about issues. Now that Johnny’s been deleted, he can no longer administer this group which was very important to him and a number of families of American soldiers who went there for support.

Johnny’s as genuine a guy as they come.

So why did Flickr nuke Johnny’s account?

This is Flickr’s official answer back to him:

Hello,

Flickr account “Fireman Johnny” was deleted by Flickr staff for violating our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.

www.flickr.com/guidelines.gne

# Do play nice.
We’re a community of many types of people, who all have the right to feel comfortable and who may not think what you think, believe what you believe or see what you see. So, be polite and respectful in your interactions with other members.

# Don’t vent your frustrations, rant, or bore the brains out of other members.
Flickr is not a venue for you to harass, abuse, impersonate, or intimidate others. If we receive a valid complaint about your conduct, we’ll send you a warning or terminate your account.

DMU group discussion titled “NEW! Level 3 Sexual Offender Moves In Nearby…Oh how charming!”

-Flickr staff

The thread referenced by Flickr has also been deleted from Flickr now as well.

And what was the thread about?

Johnny was upset that a level 3 sex offender (the worst 3% of all offenders) with previous convictions for child molestation had moved into his neighborhood next to a school. Johnny was upset by this and so he posted a thread about this in DMU on Flickr along with the molester’s *publicly available information* from a state run sex offender registry. The registry is public information and anyone can access it here.

The registry has no stipulation against sharing or republishing the information and in fact even has a “tell a friend” button right on the form where you can put in a friend’s email address and have the entry sent to them automatically.

In the thread Johnny never threatened anyone. He simply posted the public info sheet on this sex offender (freely available to anyone on the internet) and then talked about his frustration with the situation in his neighborhood. But apparently he violated Flickr’s policy against “venting ones frustrations online.”

Because Flickr has no undo account deletion, Johnnys 5-year account is now permanently erased.

Fireman Johnny has started a new Flickr account as Firefighter Johnny, but unfortunately his previous five years, including all his photos and entire digital existence on Flickr have been wiped completely off of planet Flickr.

I quite honestly don’t know what to do about these reckless and random account deletions that seem to be happening more and more frequently on Flickr. If Fireman Johnny can be deleted, any of us can be deleted. Being upset about a level 3 sex offender and posting about it on Flickr absolutely should not get your account deleted. Johnny was upset that this guy moved into his neighborhood right by an elementary school. That’s a natural reaction. He shared his upsetting news in a thread on Flickr and whamo, the Flickr police nuked his account right out from underneath him.

Another DMU brother hits the dust, and a good one at that.

That sucks.

Blake Irving, if you really care about Flickr like you claimed Friday in your tweet, you’ll fix this mess.

Account deletions should not be immediate, permanent and irrevocable. If we invest thousands of hours of our online lives into Flickr we *deserve* an appeal process. We *deserve* due process before our digital lives are deleted. We *deserve* an opportunity to take self-corrective action before you nuke us out of existence.

We entrust you with our digital lives. Have some respect for the content we bring to Flickr. Have some basic human decency. Because without our content your Flickr is nothing. Flickr only works because of our generosity in sharing our content. Acknowledge that and show us some respect.

Why couldn’t you have just told Johnny that you had a problem with his thread and that if he didn’t delete it you’d nuke him? Why couldn’t you have just nuked the thread and left his account alive? Why destroy a 5-year account, his administration of other important groups and his whole digital life on Flickr?

Johnny didn’t deserve this. Thanks for making Flickr a little bit safer for child molesters and a little bit more hostile and fearful for the rest of us Yahoo.

Nice work indeed Flickr!

No, Flickr reserves the right to delete an account for no reason. Seriously. Read the Terms and Conditions before you go too far with this.

Flickr is a private business and is not answerable to you. Your only power in this game is the press and your continued business.

Cut your losses and move on. Delete your account if it makes you feel better, but expecting detailed answers is unrealistic.
It takes a lot of equipment to get a ReSurge team functioning thousands of miles from its base in California. The team meets at the airport in San Francisco, where some airlines graciously allow us one to two large boxes along with each suitcase. The team’s journey to Quy Nhon, Vietnam was no exception. Twenty-eight heavy boxes were loaded onto the EVA flight to Taiwan. After a 15 hour journey, the team had a four-hour layover and then one more three and a half hour flight to Ho Chi Minh City for an overnight stay.

For safety reasons, the boxes containing all our equipment were taken to the hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. There is always a point when traveling with the boxes when I almost despair, as it seems we will never get them to their destination. This occurred the next morning back at the Ho Chi Minh City airport. We had placed all the boxes on trolleys in the intense heat and headed to the Vietnamese airline counter. It was at that point that our coordinators and translators, Kim Satterlee and Hoa Ton returned with worried expressions on their faces. They were very upset. They had just been informed that the “big plane” had left very early that morning and that our afternoon flight to Quy Nhon was too small to carry any boxes. This represented a major dilemma, as we need the equipment to do our pre-op clinic and to set up the operating room for surgeries. We had three hours in which we had to arrange safe alternate transport for the boxes and catch the afternoon flight ourselves.

Fortunately, we have a tireless wonderful local partner, Dr Hien, who has been working in collaboration with ReSurge for many years. She came to our rescue! Within two hours we had a truck loaded with the boxes, ready to face the 16-hour journey to Quy Nhon. The next morning, at our hotel in Quy Nhon, we received good news: the truck had just arrived and was ready for off-loading! The reward was we were able to host clinic for over 100 patients, and surgeries were started the very next day, thousands of miles away from our home base.

Start time: 2009-12-09 End time: 2009-12-23 Venue: Ho Chi Minh International Exhibition Center

Contact: Huang Xiaoling Contact Phone: 0771-2848732 Sponsored by: Vietnam Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) Vietnam Investment Plan (MPI)

Sponsor: Guangxi World Exhibitions Ltd (GXIEX)

Show Overview: Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the east of Indochina Peninsula, North China Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Yunnan border. Land area of about 330,000 square kilometers, a population of about 87,000,000. Vietnam is now the fastest growing economy in Southeast Asia countries, is also second only to China in Asia. Is in the reform and opening up, rapid economic development. Since joining the WTO, Vietnam’s integration into the world economic circle faster and faster pace, by a traditional agricultural country to the distribution center for industrial manufacturing country into the world, and now the level of economic development of Vietnam and China, close to the mid-nineties, industry, construction, manufacturing and other projects by small and medium sized to large-scale transition. Vietnamese government has Haiphong, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City has developed a new industrial area, etc., will Haiphong City Special Economic Zone has been set.

Reform and opening up in Vietnam, economic development, expand the industrial, manufacturing and speed up the urban construction and other requirements, the urgent need for a large number of advanced industrial, manufacturing and infrastructure industries machinery and equipment, but its basic industries in Vietnam late start simply can not meet domestic market demand, so the demand for machinery and equipment in Vietnam on the existence of significant import dependence. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese government has recognized the importance of industrialization and modernization, has plans to import large quantities of foreign investment in advanced machinery equipment and raw materials, introduction of advanced technology. To further increase to attract high-quality mechanical equipment into the export to Vietnam, Vietnam has accelerated the pace, sponsored by Ministry of Trade and Industry in Vietnam by the Vietnamese Government, “Vietnam International Industrial Machinery Exhibition equipment and raw materials,” Vietnam Advertising Company (VIETFAIR) contractors responsible for each term of the exhibition is the Vietnamese industrial machinery and equipment industry the highest degree of specialization of the exhibition, is of foreign machinery and equipment manufacturers a good platform to enter the Vietnamese market.

2009 Vietnam International Industrial machinery and equipment and raw materials exhibit area will be more than 5000 square meters, the national pavilions are: Vietnam, China, Russia, South Korea from 10 countries and regions of the 160 exhibitors on display the most advanced equipment and technology products!

Machinery manufacturers in China to enter the Vietnamese market is facing a rare historical opportunity:

As 2004, China and ASEAN of “10 +1″ reciprocal agreement entered into force, the acceleration of the integration process in Asia, which means that a population of more than 1.8 billion, the economic value reached 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars, mainly comprised of developing countries, China ?? gradually formed the ASEAN Free Trade Area. According to China – ASEAN Free Trade Area tariff reduction scheme from 2010, the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area of the 90% of the products will achieve 0% customs tariff, which the Chinese products, particularly machinery it will be a great good news. This will speed up China and Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries, economic integration, we can see that Vietnam is not only a great potential of the terminal sales market, but also Chinese enterprises entailed the successful first step into the ASEAN market.

Vietnamese market at this stage on a variety of mechanical equipment has a very strong demand, in order to promote social and economic development. Facing Europe and the United States but expensive machinery and equipment, maintenance, maintenance costs are high, parts dependent on the characteristics of origin, so eager to import a large number of advanced and affordable, maintenance, machinery and equipment to facilitate routine maintenance, while machinery and equipment made in China ” affordable “, practicability, and the border with Vietnam, to facilitate personnel exchanges, the characteristics of goods and low transportation costs, China’s machinery and equipment is the best starting point to enter the Vietnamese market. We believe that faced with a need to develop the market, a professional industrial machinery exhibition, will become China’s enterprises, the machinery manufacturer and supplier to enter the Vietnamese market opportunity.

Participation Fee 1, booth fee: A. indoor booth: 16,000 yuan / 9M2 standard facilities, the (more standard booth includes: three panels show, the company’s English fascia board, carpet, fluorescent 1, desk, two chairs, 220/5A power socket); B.

Chris Devonshire-Ellis: China Profit Margins Shrinking As Investors Consider Asia 2.0

I’ve just been speaking on China-India demographics at the Leading Edge Alliance annual M&A conference in Chicago. The LEA is an accounting network of over 160 firms in 90 countries with a combined revenue of some US$ 2.4 billion in 2009. Member firms (of which Dezan Shira & Associates is one) are the largest practices in their respective regions outside of the Big Four. To put the size of the network into perspective, if the members all traded under one brand such as PWC, rather than the individual names members possess, the Leading Edge Alliance would be the second largest accounting practice in the world. Ernst & Young, Deloitte, and KPMG would all be smaller. So when LEA member firms get together to discuss global M&A, it’s pretty big deal sizes that get bandied about and the bankers and VC funds are there in droves to listen to what’s going on and pitch for deals.

I’ve already written about the changing demographics in China in my recent piece China Demographics Dictate India As Global Manufacturing Hub and outlined what my experiences between China and India have been, together with gut instinct and some impressive World Bank data. Consequently, it’s also good to hear from LEA member firms about their clients, especially the China-based ones, and how they are faring. The prognosis, however, is generally not good. There were too many stories of manufacturing businesses, some in fairly hi-tech industries, having profit margins squeezed so much via a combination of higher labor costs, price rises in local parts, increased tariffs and so on that several members complained that their clients were increasingly unable to justify a China presence. The reasons I explained were the labor law issues, through which China is essentially passing off part of the costs of pension funds to foreign businesses, an aging workforce that is becoming more expensive to maintain, and rises in basic materials in China. The country has just gotten that much more expensive.

While there’s a certain inevitability about that, it’s not just China that is at fault here. Foreign investors have long gotten used to the “China Price” and are now reluctant to cede any ground in their need to maintain healthy margins. Not for nothing do many Chinese factory owners complain that it is the foreign businessman who makes all the money, leaving Chinese businessmen with very little. It’s sobering to read in the pages of China’s Global Times that for Mattel toys, for example, a single toy typically brings it a profit of around US$ 3.60, out of which the Chinese manufacturer earns about 1.5 cents. Yet those margins need to be maintained, or the business will go elsewhere. Purchasing departments are never known for their generosity, and China is about to lose business because of it.

But it’s not purely an economic issue. It’s also a deliberate policy on behalf of the Chinese government. The upshot of this is that China is becoming choosier in the types of investment it wants, and this is manifesting itself via the process of becoming more expensive, especially in basic manufacturing. This is also to be expected, as for several years now the Chinese Government has been warning that the country needs to move up the value added chain. That is happening, and consequently in certain industries (low end manufacturing in particular) China is no longer the place to be. In response to the question over profit margin erosion in China, it was also mentioned that Mexico – where the client has a second factory – is becoming increasingly dangerous as drug related violence hinders the ability to get on with normal business. A combination of a loss of confidence in Mexico and an increase in operating costs in China is leading U.S. manufacturers to consider Asia 2.0. For these, Vietnam rings true, and Ho Chi Minh City (I was also there recently) is booming with the voices of U.S. businessmen looking at setting up plants. We should know, after all Dezan Shira & Associates is also in the country. The other sensible option for relocating a China-based manufacturing unit for the U.S. market would be Chennai on India’s Southeast coast. That’s just across the Andaman Sea from Thailand and shipping costs from Chennai or Ho Chi Minh City to the United States are very similar. The China plus one strategy it seems is being fulfilled.

However, it’s not all bad news for China. Although I personally feel the country is entering into a two to three year period of some uncertainty (the leadership will be replaced in 2012), and things may be a little rocky for China until 2015, the country is still a great destination for investments that focus on newer technologies. In some, China is stealing ahead globally. Bio-engineering for example is highly regulated in the United States and the European Union, yet research continues apace in China. New sources of energy too are very much a China play, as are areas in aerospace and innovative engineering. China continues to evolve and is moving upstream. But for foreign investors finding profit margins squeezed, it’s a sign your China adventure now needs to be replaced with a home away from home elsewhere in Asia. China is becoming more selective as concerns the FDI it wants, and squeezing those it doesn’t out of its borders is just part of the never ending merry-go-round of global manufacturing, sourcing, and supply chain development. If that rings true for you, then Vietnam and India are the places to consider as manufacturing hubs in order to maintain profit margins.
